Amazon Prime‘s latest web series Rasbhari that stars Swara Bhasker in a lead role has created a furore on social media. The series revolves around the story of a young man named Nand (played by Ayushman Saxena), who falls for his teacher Shanu (Swara).
Lyricist and Central Board of Film Certification’s Chief Prasoon Joshi expressed his discontent over one of the scenes from the series, saying it’s not right to objectify a young girl.
He shared a post on Twitter that read, “Saddened by Web series #Rasbhari’s irresponsible content portraying a little girl child dancing provocatively in front of men drinking. Creators and audiences need to seriously rethink Freedom of expression or freedom of exploitation? Let’s spare children in the desperate need for entertainment.”
Swara responded to Prasoon clarifying how he misinterpreted the scene. She said that it was the exact opposite of how he had perceived it.
She wrote, “With respect sir, I think you have misunderstood the scene. The scene is different from what you have described. The kid is dancing on her own will. Her father is ashamed to see her. The dance is not provocative, the kid is just dancing, she isn’t aware that the society will even sexualise her – this is what the scene shows.”
In the scene that Prasson is referring to, we see Swara’s younger version (played by Mannat Sharma), dancing on Saat Samundar Paar. She is fond of dancing. Seeing her dance, her father’s friends, who are drinking, tell him to keep his kids in control.
