We imagine that rich people children must be lucky, because of all the riches and wealth, that they are set to inheritance. Well, that’s wrong.
Many of the world’s richest people have publicly stated that their children will not inherit all the money they have made and that they will instead donate most of their wealth to charity. They claim they don’t want to spoil their children and want them to learn the value of money on their own. Some of these people have already put it into their will, while others are seriously contemplating doing it.
Here are five of the billionaires who have pledged their fortunes to charity.
1- Bill & Melinda Gates – over 90% to charity
Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda Gates plans to pass on the vast majority of their $106 billion fortune to charitable causes. Gates and his wife Melinda created the Giving Pledge in 2010, which encourages more of the super-rich to leave the majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes instead of passing it down to their children.
2- Jackie Chan – all of it to charity
The Hong Kong-born actor and martial arts expert, who found fame in Hollywood, has two children. He has his own charity, the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation, and plans to give away his wealth. Chan already pledged to give half of his estimated $400 million to charity and plans to pledge the other half, sometime soon. He once said, “If he (Jackie’s son) is capable, he can make his own money. If he is not, then he will just be wasting my money.”
3- Daniel Craig – most of it to charity
Over the years, Daniel Craig has earned a significant amount of fans, as well as money by portraying one of the most iconic versions of 007. Craig has said he won’t leave a single penny of his $125 million fortune to his children when he dies, as he finds the idea of inheritance “distasteful”.
4- Warren Buffett – 99% to charity
Warren Buffett is the fifth richest man in the world with a staggering net worth of $68.1 billion. Buffett is committed to donating more than 99 percent of his wealth to charity during his lifetime or at the time of his death. His children will still inherit about $681 million. He is also encouraging other billionaires of the world to do the same.
5- Mark Zuckerberg & Priscilla Chan – 99% to charity
At just 36, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is one of the youngest in the 10 richest people in the world. Zuckerberg is the 4th richest man in the world, with a net worth over $82.6 billion. He and his wife Priscilla Chen announced on the occasion of their daughter Max’s birth that they planned to give away 99% of their shares in the company over their lifetimes. The money will go towards the couple’s initiative to “advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation,” which includes education and curing diseases.
