The Indian television industry is as big an industry as Bollywood. So are the controversies which emerge out of the so-called, small screen industry. Just like Bollywood actors and filmmakers, the TV fraternity is not infallible. As much drama as you experience on your television screens, more of it unfolds off the screen as well.
Here’s a look at some of the craziest controversies that have plagued Indian TV:
1- Vindu Dara Singh’s arrest in 2013, for alleged involvement in spot-fixing in cricket
In 2013, actor Vindu Dara Singh was arrested in connection with a betting scandal associated with the Indian Premier League. He spent three days in police custody before being released on bail and was one of the 19 people arrested in the case.
2- Sunil Grover and Kapil Sharma’s long-drawn fall-out
The two popular comedians had a mid-air tiff in 2017 and Kapil, reportedly, under the influence of alcohol even hurled a shoe at his once friend Sunil. Later, Kapil posted an apology on his Twitter handle.
But Sunil who was visibly quite upset with Kapil replied by posting this photo on his official Twitter handle.
3- Shilpa Shinde’s exit from Bhabhi Ji Ghar Pe Hain
In 2016, Shilpa Shinde, who starred as Angoori in the popular show Bhabhi Ji Ghar Pe Hain, quit the show citing that the makers made her work like a “puppet.”
Consequently, the production channel filed a case against her claiming a “breach of contract” and tantrums from the actor. And the producers did not take long to replace Shilpa with actor Shubhangi Atre to play the popular role of Angoori Bhabhi.
4- Sofia Hayat turned into a nun and then apparently, renounced it
In June 2016, Sofia declared that she has adopted spirituality and become a nun. Now she was Gaia Sofia Mother. She even gave up her silicone implants. Now, this was not the stuff you could expect from someone named the new “Curvy Icon” by Vogue Italia. However, soon she was soon back to flaunting her assets and posting videos in her innerwear on Instagram. Yes, we were as confused as you!
5- TV’s ‘favourite sweethearts’, Shweta Singh and Cezanne Khan’s relationship off the camera
One of the most iconic couples in the history of Indian television, Shweta Tiwari and Cezanne Khan, kept the audience hooked to their TV screens with their magical on-screen chemistry. According to the reports, on-screen lovebirds were dating each other in real life too. But soon their relationship ended due to their personal differences. And in fact, it ended on a bitter note, so much so, that they can’t stand each other now.
Cezanne had admitted that he was dating Shweta at some point in time, but they are no longer together. But, Shweta Tiwari brushed off rumors of them dating, categorically stating that she had told him she’d sue him for defamation if he continued with these rumors.
6- Kushal Tandon and Ameesha Patel’s Twitter war
Kushal Tandon and Ameesha Patel indulged in a war of words, quite literally, on Twitter after Kushal commented about a girl (Ameesha) not standing up for National Anthem at a movie theatre.
Ameesha responded by citing ‘monthly girl problems’ as an excuse, to which Tandon responded with multiple obvious puns.
7- Tannishtha Chatterjee walking out of Comedy Nights Bachao
Tannishtha went on the comedy show to promote her film Parched, but came out bashing it for passing racist comments against her skin tone. She even wrote a Facebook post to express anger, accusing the hosts of the show of taking things too far in the name of a ‘roast’. A spokesperson of Colors TV apologized to her as well.
8- Pehredaar Piya Ki was cancelled
The makers of Pehredaar Piya Ki, a show that revolved around a 10-year-old boy who gets married to an 18-year-old girl were asked to pull it off by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. A certain section of the audience had filed a petition against the show demanding a ban. After facing severe backlash, the show was called off after a month of airing on TV.
