Most of us know about and root for spunky mainstream Bollywood ‘heroines’. But there’s a horde of actresses who play supporting roles, give the film a new lease of credibility and yet they go unnoticed. They are the real artists who, after many years, still find it tough to find a place in viewers’ hearts.
Here are ten underrated actresses that are way ahead of their peers, and perhaps deserve many more opportunities in the mainstream:
1- Sayani Gupta
Sayani Gupta is one of those underrated actors, who deserve more credit and attention than what she is getting right now. Although she’s rising up the Bollywood ranks pretty fast, we want her to make her presence felt in the industry!
2- Kubra Sait
Kubra broke a lot of gender stereotypes with her jaw-dropping portrayal of Kuckoo in Sacred Games. We really expect to see more of Kubra in movies.
3- Dia Mirza
Dia Mirza surely needs to be celebrated way more than she has been over these years. Even though her debut Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein was a superhit, the same can’t be said about the films that followed. She is one of those underrated talents that we have surely failed. This woman deserves so much more!
4- Divya Dutta
Divya Dutta may have done a large number of movies but in my and many others opinion, she could do a lot better if offered some lead roles. All she has been doing so far are supporting roles with very few exceptions. She is one of those few actresses who are not afraid to break the stereotype and take on roles just for the heck of it.
5- Maanvi Gagroo
Truly, a great actress, Maanvi is our body-positive icon who is very confidently breaking the stereotypical standards of beauty in Bollywood. We want to see more of her in movies.
6- Kalki Koechlin
The actress is immensely talented but Bollywood casts her in supporting roles. She is trained in theater and it comes out really well onscreen. She is an amazing actress also being a very unpredictable one nevertheless worth looking out for.
7- Radhika Apte
With some path-breaking performances, this actress definitely deserves more attention. Having worked in theater, her performances are polished and she effortlessly glides into any character. She is brilliant in whatever she does and we hope to see many more brilliant performances before she is put down as an ‘art-house actress’.
8- Amrita Puri
The best thing about Aisha along with Anand Tiwari, she hasn’t got any major opportunities apart from Kai Po Che. She’s a fantastic actor and deserves so much more in terms of projects, fame, and money.
9- Richa Chaddha
Richa Chadha has proved her acting talent and delivered brilliant performances onscreen. Choosing to do offbeat roles that any newcomer would steer clear of, she has made a mark in Bollywood but still hasn’t got her due. She has a raw energy about herself that needs to be acknowledged before she’s long forgotten.
10- Rasika Duggal
For some, recognition and stardom comes after a long bumpy ride and Rasika Duggal is one of them. After brief yet powerful roles in TV and films, she totally left the audience spellbound with her performance in films like Kshay, Qissa, and Manto. Well, she surely deserves bigger miracles and we hope filmmakers recognize her talent and give her bigger and better roles.
We would definitely want to see these ladies more often in Bollywood movies playing pivotal roles, rather than appearing as second leads.
